We Ask for the Influent Result. Almost Nobody Has One.

When a failed lab result lands in our inbox, we do not start with the parameter that failed. We start with what the whole sheet is telling us, and then we ask for the one number that is almost never there.

If BOD is failing, the aeration system is not enough. That is nearly always where it ends. There is no clever reading of the rest of the sheet that changes it, and nothing downstream matters until the air is right.

If BOD is passing and ammonia is failing, the plant is doing the easy half of its job. The bacteria that eat BOD are fast and forgiving. The ones that remove ammonia are neither — they reproduce far more slowly, need considerably more oxygen per unit of work, and a single chemical shock sets them back weeks.

So the next thing we ask for is the influent ammonia. And this is where most conversations stop.

Nearly every prospect sends effluent results only. That is half the story. Without the influent figure we cannot tell whether the plant is removing 90% of the ammonia and still landing above the limit, or removing essentially none of it. Those are two completely different problems, with two completely different price tags, and they produce the identical failed certificate.

Phosphate we do not chase at this stage. If ammonia has failed, the biology is not where it needs to be, and phosphate is a symptom of a longer conversation. Nitrate we like to know but rarely need — the limit is 14 mg/L for Classes B and C and it did not move in 2021, while ammonia sits at 3 or 4, so in the results that reach us ammonia is almost always the first to go. Once it has, the nitrate figure tells us little we did not already know.

TKN matters. And when TSS and BOD are high together, we stop looking at the biology and look at the front of the plant: either the primary settler is not doing its work, or there is no settler, and then we start asking about shock loads and toxic loads.

The parameter people ignore until it is too late is not on the effluent sheet

It is the influent. And we are not describing a rare oversight.

Across our own project history, fewer than one in six sites had any laboratory result on file when they came to us. Not one had a tested influent. Some owners only learn which parameters apply to their industry when DENR writes to them and says so — the set that matters varies considerably by sector.

So we assume. And you pay for it.

We would rather not, but there is no honest alternative, and anyone in this market who claims they design from measured influent data on every job is describing a country that does not exist.

The trouble with assuming is that every assumption has to be made in the safe direction, and the safe direction is always bigger. Told the BOD is around 300, we design at 350, sometimes 400. Told nothing at all, the margin widens further, because a plant that cannot pass becomes our problem as surely as the owner's. That margin is real money, and it buys nothing except protection against a number nobody measured — tank volume, steel, blower capacity.

Which is the whole argument for sampling, and it is a commercial argument rather than a lecture. Every sample you give us takes margin out of the design. Fewer assumptions, tighter sizing, a smaller price on the plant.

If you do sample, timing decides the answer. Wastewater grabbed at the wrong hour describes a plant that does not exist — a kitchen at 3pm and the same kitchen at 7pm are two different influents. Where the operating day has a real swing, we ask for several samples across it, collected into one bottle, so the result describes the shift rather than the moment.

And where a client cannot sample, we write down what we assumed and show it in the quotation. An assumption you can see is one you can argue with. An assumption buried inside a tank size is one you discover years later.

If your last result came back failed, the useful next step is not a new supplier. It is knowing which half of the plant is actually failing, and that is usually a short conversation once we can see the sheet.
