Engineered to pass DENR discharge standards

Philippine wastewater discharge is governed by DENR Administrative Order 2016-08, as amended by DAO 2021-19. The limits that apply to you depend on the classification of the water body you discharge into — and on the significant parameters for your industry, not a generic checklist. Projects in Laguna de Bay tributaries carry additional LLDA requirements, and Manila Bay dischargers are held to stricter coliform limits under the Manila Bay clean-up mandamus.

We establish your discharge basis first — receiving water body, applicable authority, and the parameters your industry is actually measured on — then design the treatment train to meet it, including nitrogen, phosphate, surfactants and fecal coliform where domestic sewage is part of the stream.

Technology

How we treat wastewater

We choose technology to fit the site, the wastewater and the operator — not the other way round. The goal is a plant that runs reliably after turnover, with the least headache for whoever operates it.

FBBR-style fixed-film biological treatment

Our default for compact biological systems. Fixed-film media stays where it is put, so there is no media loss, no strainer clogging and no pump blockage — and it is far easier to inspect and service in underground tanks.

MBBR moving-bed systems

Used where the process or the client specifies it, and where tanks are above ground and accessible.

Two-stage aeration with anoxic denitrification

Separate stages for BOD removal and for nitrification. Staging diversifies the bacteria and is what makes ammonia removal reliable rather than intermittent.

Dissolved air flotation (DAF)

Standard pretreatment ahead of biological treatment for food manufacturing and any stream carrying heavy oil, grease and solids.

Chemical precipitation and phosphate removal

Dosing after biological treatment, ahead of clarification, where phosphate is a regulated parameter or where reuse water quality matters.

Ozonation and advanced oxidation

For colour, odour and refractory organics that biology alone will not remove — including chemical-heavy and non-biodegradable industrial wastewater.

AFM® filtration, activated carbon and UV

Tertiary polishing for solids, turbidity, colour and final disinfection where treated water is reused or where effluent must look as clean as it tests.

  1. Establish the discharge basisWe identify your industry classification, receiving water body and the authority you answer to — DENR, LLDA, your water utility, LGU or industrial park — before any technology is chosen.
  2. Survey the site and the existing tanksAvailable footprint, existing septic or treatment tanks, depth, access, flow rate and operating hours. Reusing sound existing structures is usually cheaper than building new.
  3. Characterise the wastewaterActual laboratory analysis where available; conservative industry-based assumptions where it is not, stated openly so you know what would change after testing.

Imported units often look cheaper on equipment price alone, but that price normally excludes shipping, duties, local civil adaptation, plumbing tie-in, commissioning, warranty support, local spare parts, operator training and permit assistance. Frequently asked questions about wastewater treatment in the Philippines

How much does a sewage treatment plant cost in the Philippines?
Cost depends on flow rate, the discharge standard you must meet, whether tanks already exist, and how much civil work is needed. A small commercial plant and a hospital facility of the same flow can differ substantially because the influent strength and the required parameters differ. Is a sewage treatment plant required by law in the Philippines?
Facilities that discharge wastewater are regulated under the Philippine Clean Water Act and DENR Administrative Order 2016-08, as amended by DAO 2021-19. In practice, a wastewater treatment facility and a discharge permit are required for most commercial, institutional and industrial establishments, and local authorities, water utilities and industrial parks often impose their own additional requirements.
What standard must treated wastewater meet before discharge?
The applicable effluent limits depend on the classification of the receiving water body — a river, a lake, coastal water or a sewer line all carry different requirements — and on which parameters are significant for your industry classification. Discharges to Laguna de Bay tributaries carry additional LLDA requirements, and Manila Bay dischargers face stricter fecal coliform limits. We confirm your specific basis before designing.
Can an existing septic tank be converted into a sewage treatment plant?
Often, yes. Where the existing chambers have usable volume and sound structure, biological carrier media, aeration and disinfection can be installed within them, avoiding new excavation. This is one of the most cost-effective routes for existing buildings and is how several of our retrofit projects were delivered.
My sewage treatment plant is failing ammonia. What is wrong?
Ammonia failure usually points to insufficient or unstable nitrification — too little aeration capacity, not enough biological surface area, short retention time, sequencing problems in batch systems, or a biomass that never fully established. It is frequently fixable without replacing the plant, by adding fixed-film media and correcting the aeration and flow regime.
Why does my treatment plant smell?
Odour is a symptom, and the type of smell tells you where the problem is. Septic or rotten-egg odour generally means the wastewater is going anaerobic somewhere — a dead zone, an overloaded tank, an underpowered blower or a failing biology. Odour is diagnostic information, not just a nuisance, and it is usually correctable.
Can treated wastewater be reused?
Yes. With appropriate tertiary treatment, treated effluent can be reused for non-potable applications such as toilet flushing, landscape irrigation, floor and equipment washing and filter backwashing, subject to final effluent quality and local authority approval. For facilities with high water bills this often carries a meaningful return.
How long does it take to build a sewage treatment plant?
The treatment equipment is rarely the long pole — civil works are. A retrofit into existing tanks moves considerably faster than a new build requiring excavation, structural works and waterproofing. Biological start-up then needs time for the bacteria to establish, which probiotics can shorten. We give a project-specific schedule with every quotation.
Do you work outside Cebu and Metro Manila?
Yes. We have delivered projects nationwide, including provincial and island sites across the Visayas, Luzon and Mindanao. Out-of-island projects carry mobilisation and freight costs, which we state openly in the quotation rather than burying them.
Do you help with DENR permits?
Yes. We provide environmental permit processing assistance for land, water and air, and we carry out accredited third-party effluent sampling and laboratory testing at commissioning so you have the documentation your permit requires.
