We Do Not Track MLSS. We Read a Cone.
Ask most consultants how to run an activated sludge plant and you will be told to track your MLSS and your sludge age. Both are correct. Both are in every textbook. And on most of the plants we work on in the Philippines, neither of them gets tracked at all.
Not because they do not matter. Because of how long the answer takes to come back.
The practical problem with a laboratory number
Unless you have your own laboratory, an MLSS result means sending a sample away and waiting. Seven to ten days is normal. By the time the figure arrives, it describes a plant that existed last week, and whatever caused the problem happened before that.
No operator sustains a routine like that, and I do not blame them. A number you receive ten days late cannot be used to make a decision today.
So we use something an operator will actually do.
What we do instead
Fill an Imhoff cone with mixed liquor from the aeration tank. Leave it thirty minutes. Read the millilitres of settled sludge.
That is the whole method. It costs the price of a plastic cone and half an hour of nobody's attention.
Our working range is roughly 50 to 200 mL/L. When it climbs above 200, we waste sludge — otherwise solids start carrying over the clarifier and you lose the clear water you were paying for. We are comfortable at the lower end, sometimes down at 50, on one condition, which I will come to.
The same thirty minutes tells you more than a level. Sludge that will not compact, or that settles and then floats back up in a sheet, is describing two entirely different faults, and you can see both in the cone before any laboratory sees anything.
Sludge age genuinely differs from plant to plant, and I will not carry a number from one site to another. What the cone gives you is a daily reading you can act on, taken by the person actually standing in front of the tank.
The condition attached to running lean
We are relaxed about a thin sludge blanket because most of our plants have fixed or moving media in them.
Media gives the slow-growing ammonia bacteria something to hold onto. They are not depending entirely on a clarifier and a return pump to keep them in the system, so a thin blanket or a bad day at the clarifier does not empty the plant of the one population that takes three weeks to rebuild.
Without media, a low reading in that cone means something quite different, and I would not run the same way.
Why we design this way at all
Most operators cannot culture activated sludge well. That is not a criticism — it is a genuinely difficult thing to do consistently, staff change, and the person who understood the plant moves on. We have found often enough that what looks like an operations problem is really turnover, and turnover is something a design can either survive or not.
Designing a plant that assumes an expert will always be standing in front of it is designing for a situation that will not last. So we build plants that forgive an imperfect week. Media is the main way we do that.
I want to be careful here, because this is easy to misread. A forgiving plant is not permission to stop looking. You still need your oxygen, your pH and your alkalinity. It buys margin on a bad week. It does not buy the right to run blind.
The short list we actually watch
Everything on this list can be read on site, by your own operator, in minutes:
- Dissolved oxygen, in the tank, at the busiest hour of the day.
- pH, because converting ammonia makes acid.
- Alkalinity, which is the buffer that stops the pH falling. This is the most-missed reading in the country.
- Settled sludge in the cone.
- Ammonia, nitrate and phosphate using a freshwater aquarium test kit — low range, cheap, and good enough to tell you whether the biology is working before you pay a laboratory to tell you it was not.
Take the ammonia reading on the incoming water as well as the final water. Almost nobody does, and without it nobody can tell whether your plant is removing most of the ammonia and still missing the limit, or removing none of it. Those are different problems with different price tags and they produce the same failed certificate.
The accredited laboratory still matters — it is what your permit runs on, and which parameters you are held to depends on the class of water you discharge into. What it cannot do is tell you what is happening this afternoon. Setting up the daily routine, and the logbook that goes with it, is part of how we operate and maintain plants.
