Your Phosphate Passed the Clarifier and Failed at the Chlorine Tank
Here is a way to spend money on chemicals, produce extra sludge, and still fail your phosphate test.
Dose correctly, bind the phosphate properly, settle it in the clarifier โ and then let some of that sludge carry over into the chlorine contact chamber.
The chlorine kills the bacteria. Dead bacteria release what they were holding. Your bound phosphate, and a good deal of ammonia with it, goes straight back into the water on its way out of your plant.
Everything you paid for, undone in the last tank.
Start with the ratio, not the chemical
Before any of that, it is worth asking whether you have a phosphate problem at all.
Bacteria build themselves out of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in a rough proportion of about 100 : 5 : 1. If your wastewater arrives somewhere near that balance, the biology takes the phosphate up as it grows and you generally will not have a phosphate result to worry about. Phosphate becomes a problem when there is a surplus beyond what the bacteria can consume. Heavy detergent use is the usual reason โ laundries, commissaries, anywhere with a lot of washing.
So the first question is not which chemical to buy. It is whether your ratio is out, and by how much. Phosphate has its own economics, and most of the cost is in the running rather than the equipment.
Where the dosing goes
When there genuinely is a surplus, we bind it. A small rapid mixer goes in between the aeration tank and the clarifier, dosing ferric chloride or PAC, which locks the phosphate into a solid that settles out with the sludge.
Two things matter more than the choice of chemical.
Dosage accuracy. Too little does nothing at all. Too much is money into the drain, plus additional sludge you now have to store and haul. There is a right dose and it is worth the trouble of finding it rather than running heavy for comfort.
Where the sludge ends up. Once phosphate is bound into a solid, that solid is your phosphate. Keep it in the clarifier and you have removed the phosphate. Let it travel and you have simply relocated it, briefly.
On batch plants, add a filter
Sequencing batch plants decant from the top of the tank, and if the settling has not fully finished, or the decanter draws a little low, solids go over with the water.
On those systems we will put a filter on the decant line rather than let the water run straight into disinfection. The filter backwash goes back to the front of the plant to be treated again, and we draw the backwash water from the chlorine contact chamber itself, which is already clean and already there.
It is a small addition and it protects the whole phosphate spend.
The same failure hits your ammonia, and your BOD
Worth saying clearly, because people think of this as a phosphate issue: sludge reaching the disinfection tank releases ammonia too. If your ammonia result is marginal and your clarifier is carrying solids over, that carry-over may be the reason you are just missing rather than just passing. The same solids will also push your BOD and TSS up together, which is how one plant of ours failed a BOD test three weeks before its inspection with perfectly healthy biology.
Clarifier carry-over is one of those faults that shows up on the certificate as a chemistry problem and is actually a hydraulics problem โ surface loading, a short-circuiting inlet, a weir out of level, or simply too much sludge in the system because nobody wasted it. Reading the settled sludge daily is usually enough to catch it before the laboratory does.
The check to run this week
Look into the chlorine contact chamber. If there is sludge in the bottom of it, or the water entering it is carrying a haze of solids rather than running clear, you have found something worth fixing before you change any dose.
Then look at the clarifier surface. Rising sludge, a scum blanket, or solids coming over the weir all point the same way.
Every plant is different, and a phosphate result can fail for reasons that have nothing to do with carry-over. This is simply the one we see undo good work most often.
