A New Plant and a Failing Plant Are Two Different Jobs
People send us the same email for two completely different problems, and the first thing we do is work out which one we are looking at.
A new facility
For a new build, every water result is an influent result. There is nothing to diagnose. The whole question is what will be produced, how much of it, and how much it varies across the day — and from there, what has to be built.
The risk on a new plant is not misreading the site. It is over-assuming. With no data the safe assumption is always the larger one, and the owner pays for that in tank volume and steel. Every sample that exists before design takes margin out of the number, which is why we push for sampling even when it slows the quotation down. An existing plant with a failed result
Almost none of that applies. Now we are reading a system that already exists and that somebody has been operating, usually for years, with adjustments nobody wrote down.
So we start with the tanks. Volume is the constraint that is expensive to change and cheap to check. If the volumes are adequate for the load and the target, most of the remaining problems are solvable — aeration capacity, sludge age, alkalinity, return rates, a settler that was never desludged properly. If the volumes are not adequate, no amount of process tuning will save it, and we say so early rather than after two months of trying.
Then we look at what can be reused. Existing tanks, existing blowers, existing civil works, sometimes existing media. A retrofit that keeps the concrete and changes the process inside it is a fundamentally different price to a new plant, and owners are rarely told that this option exists at all.
Who builds it is also a choice
The construction side can go three ways, and we say so in every quotation: we build it, you build it, or your own contractor builds it and we supervise their work at a stated fee.
On a retrofit inside an operating building, the third route is often the sensible one, because your contractor already knows the site, the access constraints and the people. We would rather supervise good local work than import a crew to learn a building from scratch.
The diagnosis has to come before the proposal
What we do not do is arrive with a fixed answer. The projects we have completed are different from each other because the sites were, and a company that proposes the same plant everywhere is selling a product rather than solving a problem.
