At 5 Cubic Metres a Day the Class Barely Matters. At 500 It Is Millions.
Two businesses can produce identical wastewater at identical flow and still need very different plants, because of where the treated water goes.
The gap between Class D and Class C ammonia is 9 mg/L against 4. On paper that is five milligrams. In engineering terms it is the difference between a process with room to wobble and one that has to nitrify reliably every day — longer sludge age, more tank volume, more air, tighter alkalinity control, real protection against shock loads.
To be accurate about it: 9 mg/L does not mean nitrification is optional. On most municipal-strength influent you are nitrifying either way. What the tighter limit removes is your margin for a bad week, and margin is bought with volume and air.
Why the same difference costs so little on one site and so much on another
At small volumes the difference is often not dramatic. On a 5 m3/day plant the tank is small either way and the blower is small either way. The stricter class costs more, but not in a way that changes anyone's decision.
At 500 or 5,000 m3/day it is a different conversation entirely. The same proportional increase in aeration and volume is now measured in millions of pesos of capital, and then again every month in power for the life of the plant. That is the figure that matters to an owner — the cost per cubic metre of running it, not the sticker price on day one.
Phosphate behaves the same way. Class C at 4 mg/L is often reachable biologically. Class B at 1.5 mg/L tends to push the design toward more deliberate phosphorus removal, and at volume that means continuous consumables, mixing, and a meaningful increase in sludge to haul away. Phosphorus removal has its own economics and they are mostly operating cost rather than capital.
Class is not the only thing that sets your target
The general effluent standards attached to your receiving water classification are the starting point, not the whole answer. Depending on your sector, additional parameters may apply, and those industry-specific requirements can be the ones that actually drive the design. A hospital, a laundry, a food plant and an office building discharging to the same river are not solving the same problem.
